Born in Chiayi (Taiwan) in 1961, Chang graduated from the Cultural University of China in film and theater. Before directing his first film Shooting in the Dark, Chang shot several series for television. He was assistant to several directors including Hou Hsiao-hsien (A City of Sadness, 1989). Ah Chung is his second feature film.
