Donald Swanson directed only two feature films African Jim (1949) and The Magic Garden (1951). With very little money, Swanson and Ruthenford made African Jim, a film starring many jazzmen of the time, such as the Jazz Maniacs and Dolly Rathebe. Despite the obstacles they encountered in distributing it, Swanson continued to make The Magic Garden.
