Johnnie TO

Grand admirateur de Sam Peckinpah, Francis Ford Coppola et Akira Kurosawa, le cinéaste Johnnie To signe en 1980 son premier film, The Enigmatic Case, après avoir longtemps travaillé à la télévision pour la chaine hongkongaise TVB. Il rencontre le succès dès 1986 : Happy Ghost 3, une comédie horrifique, mais se révèle vraiment au public français en 2000 avecThe Mission, puis Breaking News présenté au festival de Cannes (2004), Election 1 et 2 (2006). En créant sa propre maison de production, Milkyway Image Company, au milieu des années 1990, Johnnie To se donne toute l’indépendance nécessaire pour affirmer son style et redonner au cinéma de Hong Kong d’après la rétrocession à la Chine une profonde impulsion créative : « Mon partenaire créatif Wai Ka-Fai et moi-même voulions aller contre de la tendance majoritaire et nous consacrer à des films fondés entièrement sur la singularité du récit et du style ».
