Born in Zaire in 1960, José Laplaine studied business management at an American university in Rome, when he discovered acting while performing in an amateur theater. He then decided to become an actor, and took courses in Brussels and then in Paris with Jack Garfein of the Actor’s Studio and played several roles in films and on television. He started writing scripts in 1985, then worked as an assistant director on two films, before directing Macadam Tribu, his first feature film.
