Merawi Gerima, born in Washington DC in 1988, graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He is the son of the renowned Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima, a legendary figure of the L.A. Rebellion (Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers), which refers to the generation of young African and African-American filmmakers who studied at the UCLA Film School from the late 1960s to the late 1980s and created a black cinema that offered an alternative to mainstream Hollywood cinema. Merawi Gerima’s first feature Residue won the Audience Award at Slamdance in 2020 and was selected for the 77th Venice Film Festival.
