Zhang Tao is a Chinese director, screenwriter and actor from Shandong province. A farmer’s son, he first studied law while also pursuing a career as a civil servant, which he quickly abandoned in order to recount in film modern China and its transformations. He joined the prestigious Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, graduating in 2015. During his studies, he made two noteworthy short films: Yi Ping and Laughing to Die. The Laugh of Madame Lin is his first feature, and was selected in the ACID section at the 2017 Cannes Festival.
